The term Isekai is sub-genre of Japanese fantasy anime, manga, light novel and video games that revolve around the main character, who is generally a very normal person, being transported to or trapped in a parallel universe. In certain anime, this universe actually existed in the main character’s world, often times as a fixed universe but it is not uncommon for it to be unknown to them.
Announced in 2018, Isekai Quartet is a chibi style crossover between the popular series Konosuba, Overlord, Re: Zero & Tanya the evil. The series is set to premiere in the second quarter of 2019 and will be written and directed by Minoru Ashina and animated by Studio Puyukai.
This anime is being hyped as one of the most ambitious crossover anime of all time and fans from all four original series are curious and excited about what they can expect from it. The preview released on the official website showed a magic button which appears create a new Isekai world that seems to bring the four series together
I’m sure you are already curious about how this series is going to cross over four different anime’s and how the characters from each series interact with each other. How will the powerful character from overload, Ainz Ooal Gown interact with Tanya the evil? Will they clash or will they collude?
The possibilities are endless! Unfortunately, we have only been given hard information about the four main characters from each series being involved and are yet to hear about other interesting characters like Ram and Rem from Re: Zero, and whether they will join Isekai Quartet as well.
Even though we are excited we can’t help but wonder why this crossover is actually taking place. One of the main possibilities could be that the animation studio just wants to keep the respective anime relevant, Overlord just finished its season and Re: Zero has an upcoming season two as well. Since they all share the theme of Isekai, it is relatively easier to do a crossover of these anime than others.
However, the fact still remains that this is a chibi series and fans can expect it to be fun loving and less serious than the original anime. That doesn’t take away the possibility that if this crossover is received well, there could be a chance of a real anime series for Isekai Quartet, where they will address a more serious audience.
Perhaps this chibi series is the perfect method for the animation studio to dip their toes in the crossover waters and test the popularity of the series, who knows? Such a thing is definitely possible and full of potential too! After all, it will have the fan base of four anime series supporting it!
